German Interior Minister visits Kapitan Andreevo

"Bulgaria already fulfilled the criteria set by the European Commission for membership of the Schengen area last year," said Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Feser during a visit to the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint with Turkey.

Feser was accompanied by acting Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov who recalled that the last time a German Interior Minister visited was back in 2008.

Stoyanov added that just over 7,000 citizens of third countries had tried to cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border since the beginning of the year compared to 27,000 in the same period last year.

Volgin bids to be European MP

Pro-Russian journalist Petar Volgin will be the second name on the ticket of Vazrazhdane for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June.

Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov called Volgin, who works for Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) "the voice of Bulgaria's free speech" and specified that he was the only citizen quota on the list for whom an exception was made.

Volgin said he had accepted the nomination because he thought it was the only way to "fight for freedom."

Interior Minister sues journalists

Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov has filed a claim for 65 000 levs against the investigation website Bird, reported the Association of European Journalists, who define the case as a standard SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation).

Stoyanov's claim is for defamation against the website's journalists Atanas Chobanov and Dimitar Stoyanov, because of a series of materials, publications on social networks and media appearances dedicated to the case with the influence network surrounding Martin Bojanov, known by the nickname Notary, who was murdered at the beginning of the year.
