Leaders condemn Hamas attacks in Israel

Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and President Rumen Radev have strongly condemned Saturday's attacks in Israel which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.

"I categorically condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas and the violence against innocent Israeli citizens," Denkov said in a statement issued by the press center of the Council of Ministers.

"Bulgaria categorically condemns this morning's terrorist attacks against Israel, in which many civilians were killed and injured," Radev wrote on social network X.

So far, one plane with Bulgarian citizens has been evacuated from Israel. Another plane is being prepared. However, there is still no information on whether Israeli people who have Bulgarian roots or passports will also be evacuated.

Euro Funds unlocked

On Saturday, Bulgaria officially submitted to the European Commission the documents necessary to receive the second payment under the National recovery and resilience plan. The submission came after 30 laws were implemented in the last three months.

The second payment under the recovery and sustainability mechanism has an approximate value of about BGN 1.4 billion and includes 66 programs, of which 22 are related to legislative changes. According to the financial department, this round is the most complex for payment to be allowed. Bulgaria will have access to funds amounting to about BGN 9 billion once the documents are sent to Brussels.

The European Commission has two months to assess the submitted request.

Miners still protest

Protests by miners from the Maritza coal complex are continuing for the eleventh day with some main arteries in southern Bulgaria still blockaded. The Trakia highway in the Stara Zagora region is shut in the wake of protests, as is the Stara Zagora - Dimitrovgrad road. The passage of vehicles is not allowed in Prohoda na Republika and Podbalkanski path near Gurkovo, as well as on the road Radnevo - Nova Zagora.

Protesters have been preparing for effective strike action since yesterday with nationwide action announced for October 12. The coal plant workers' main demand is that the territorial plans for a just transition be withdrawn and revised. The plans stipulate that Bulgaria should start closing the plants and will receive millions in funds to modernize the local economy of coal regions.
