Bulgaria bolsters security at Jewish sites

Security should be strengthened at airports, train stations, synagogues, places of Jewish worship and other sites associated with Israel, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov announced after a meeting of the National Counterterrorism Center.

The measures were announced following last weekend's attacks by Hamas inside Israel. For all other institutions and organizations, the level remains the lowest possible.

An emergency evacuation flight by private carrier European Air Charter, which was supposed to transport Bulgarians from Tel Aviv, was canceled for operational reasons. The Bulgaria Air flight to and from Tel Aviv, scheduled for October 12 (Thursday), is still due to go ahead.

Bulgaria is taking precautions after a terrorist attack against Israeli citizens in Burgas in 2012 that killed five people.

Industrial production in August shrinks

After a negative outcome in July, the index of industrial production in August increased by 1.3% on a monthly basis, but a year-on-year comparison showed a decrease of 9.7% - a trend maintained for the eighth month in a row. This comes from data of the National Statistical Institute published today.

The mining industry recorded an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous month, the energy industry - 1.6%, and the processing industry - 1.5%.

On an annual basis, the largest decline was reported in the energy sector - by 40.7%. In the mining industry, the contraction was by 12.1%, and in the processing industry - by 1.9%.

More attempts at illegal entry

Bulgarian police thwarted more than 158,000 attempts by illegal immigrants to enter Bulgaria ibetween January 1 and September 30.

In the same period of 2022, there were more than 115,000 attempts, so the year to date has recorded a 38% increase. It is possible that some people tried to enter Bulgarian territory more than once.

A total of 1,242 immigrants have been detained for illegal entry into Bulgaria so far in 2023. Syria accounted for 629, Morocco - 200, Afghanistan - 199, and Iraq - 80, the Interior Ministry reports.
