Protesters gather in Sofia against Covid certificates

Several thousand people were bused in by the small Vazrazhdane party to stage a protest against the certificates which they claim are "discriminatory". They tried to meet representatives of the National Assembly, but were denied entry and so tried to forcibly enter the building. The police repelled them and they then gathered in front of other state buildings.

Government wants to end golden passports

Those are the people who receive citizenship based on investments made. This gateway to Bulgarian (and EU) passports was widely seen as a back door to individuals able to pay the right officials and the Justice Ministry concluded there were no real investments made as a result of the measure. Last month the US also cited this scheme as a reason for not offering visa waivers to Bulgaria.

Bulgarian universities to welcome foreign-born students

300 people from North Macedonia per year can study in Bulgaria on a state-paid subsidy, the government has decided. 5 PhD students can also be covered by the state. This is double the amount of state-aid that North Macedonian students currently receive and is a sign of good-will.

Also, those members of the Bulgarian diaspora abroad who can prove Bulgarian descent, can study in Bulgarian universities on a lower fee, or on a state-paid stipend.
