6th election in three years seems inevitable

GERB's rotational candidate for prime minister Mariya Gabriel, who was due to be voted in as the new prime minister, has made a public call for new elections.

This emerged after increasingly rowdy recriminations between GERB and WCC-DB. Now it seems extremely likely that new parliamentary elections, the sixth in just three years, are inevitable.

GERB reiterated that they will not negotiate for a cabinet with the second mandate of WCC-DB. "We say no to setting new conditions repeatedly," Gabriel announced.

Recent developments centered on a dispute over the ministry of interior with WCC-DB wanting to retain the power of appointment. Other conflicts revolved around the head of the energy ministry and legal reform.

MP Delyan Peevski, an integral part of the ruling majority from MRF, also withdrew his support for a potential second mandate cabinet.

EC gives millions to Bulgarian farmers

The European Commission has approved giving aid to Bulgarian farmers valued at 86.9 million euros due to the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine, the Ministry of Agriculture announced.

It is specified that the aid will be granted and paid directly.

Beneficiaries can be farmers in animal husbandry, beekeeping, fruit and vegetable production, rose oil, wine and tobacco. They will be able to receive up to 280,000 euros but the aid must be granted by June 30.

Unemployment remains lowest in Sofia

An average of nine unemployed people compete for one job vacancy in Bulgaria, according to data from the Employment Agency. The competition is strongest in the Targovishte region, where 37 people vie for one vacant position, and the weakest is in Sofia, as well as in the regions of Silistra, Kyustendil, Dobrich and Varna - where five applicants vie for one position.

The unemployment rate was 5.8% as of January 31, with the highest being recorded in the Vidin region - just under 16 percent, and the lowest in Sofia city - 1.6 percent.

In a total of 18 regions, or in more than half, the level of registered unemployment is above the national average. Among those with the highest levels are the regions of Montana and Shumen - with 13.2 and 11.4 percent respectively

Out of a total of 165,000 registered in the labor offices, 36,000 unemployed have been registered for more than one year, and just over 19,000 are under 29 years of age.
