VAT for restaurants to increase

Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov clarified that he believes restaurants should not continue working with a reduced to 9% VAT rate. The measure was introduced in the midst of the pandemic in order to preserve businesses from bankrupting.

"There is an upward trend in the restaurants revenues, there is an increased number of tourists, and I see no reason for the anti-crisis measures to remain", the Prime Minister explained in response to questions about the 2024 budget.

In March, when the draft budget for this year was discussed, restaurant unions raised their voices against the return of the rate to 20%. Earlier, the Minister of Tourism, Zaritsa Dinkova, confirmed her support for the reduced tax rate to be maintained for the next year.

Bozhkov's drama has no end

The former gambling businessman Vasil Bozhkov, released under house arrest, announced that he is a protected witness in the case, in which he has already been interrogated twice and which is based on his allegations against former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and GERB PR Sevdelina Arnaudova. According to Bozhkov, he has given away millions of leva as bribes in order to gain peace for his business in Bulgaria. He gave a press conference via video link from his home to the media during the weekend.

"Vasil Bozhkov was not, nor is he currently, a 'protected witness'," the prosecutor's office commented in the late afternoon regarding the businessman's allegations.
