Vassilev pessimistic about inflation
Inflation cannot be suppressed through budget measures, Finance Minister Assen Vassilev told parliament. At a joint meeting and with the participation of various organizations, MPs debated the state budget, as well as that of the health insurance fund and the state social insurance.
The draft state budget received the approval of the budget and social parliamentary commissions, but not the economic commission.
Vassilev pointed out that inflation in Bulgaria is driven by energy and food prices - EU traded goods. "If we want to reduce inflationary pressures along these lines or other tradables, we have to reduce consumption to the extent that it affects the aggregate consumption of the entire EU. Being 1% of the EU's GDP, it is very difficult to do that," he declared.
