GERB won in 23 regions
As in previous elections, GERB won in most regions throughout Bulgaria. The results show that Borissov's party won in 23 of them. GERB's rival, the coalition of WCC-DB, won the most support in Sofia, Plovdiv and Ruse, while DPS maintained its leading position in five places - Silistra, Shumen, Razgrad, Targovishte and Kardjali - mostly home to Turkish ethnic minorities.
WCC-DB won a total of just under 211,000 votes in Sofia at the 2022 election, but 18,000 fewer on 2 April. The pro-Kremlin Vazrazhdane party gained 20,000 votes and finished with almost 70,000 in the capital.
Ninova accuses Radev of "stealing" votes
BSP's leader Kornelia Ninova has accused President Radev of "stealing" votes from BSP thanks to regional governors appointed by the cabinet who worked for the rival socialist grouping The Left.
The newly formed political entity, constituted by former BSP members, claimed around 2% of the votes and was always expected to siphon off some BSP votes. According to Ninova, out of the 50,000 votes which The Left received, many should have gone to her party.
Ninova, in one of the first post-election statements from any major party leader, also stressed that her party would negotiate with everyone in the new parliament to find the formula for a new cabinet.
According to Alfa Research 88% of the people who voted think that a cabinet should be formed.
State goes deeper into red
The state deficit continued to grow in March, reaching BGN 690 million, or 0.4% of the estimated GDP for the year, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance. This occurred despite increased revenues from VAT.
State expenditure grew by nearly 27% compared to an 18% rise in revenues.
Currently, the caretaker government works with the old budget, from 2022, as a new one was not voted due to the lack of parliament. Therefore the state makes spending correspond to those made in the same month of 2022, adding the voted new costs on to them.
