No alliance between two biggest parties

WCC's leaders Kiril Petkov and Assen Vassilev have said their party would not support any attempt by GERB to form a government.

Meanwhile, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said he would be an MP for the first time in years and declared that his party was open to talks with all factions. But he avoided commenting on WCC's non-negotiation stance.

The nationalist Vazrazhdane party, which came third, stated that if they receive the mandate to form a cabinet, the party will present a government with its own composition. Its leader Kostadin Kostadinov did not specify which parties he was willing to work with and said the best outcome was another election.

Bulgarian Energy Minister demands sanctions against Germany

Energy Minister Rosen Hristov has demanded sanctions against countries that use Russian gas, as well as for those that still have companies operating on Russian territory.

His words came after Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck insisted on sanctions being imposed on countries still using Russian nuclear fuel. Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, but also France, still use Russian fuel for their nuclear power plants.

In addition to delivering fuel elements, Russia's Rosatom also provides other services for these states, including the burial of radioactive waste, German news agency DPA noted.

In February, President Rumen Radev said Bulgaria would veto any European sanctions on Russian nuclear fuel.

Gas storage expansion officially starts

The expansion of the gas storage in Chiren is set to start. All the necessary contracts have been signed and, according to Bulgartransgaz, all key agreements concluded. The gas transmission operator signed today (April 5) a contract for BGN 221 million excluding VAT with the Bulgarian company GBS.

The current contract is for the design, construction and commissioning of ten new operational and three observation wells. Hristo Kovachki, an energy businessman, was expected to participate in the construction but resigned from the project after winning one of the tenders.

The project is estimated to cost BGN 600 million. On completion in 2025, it will provide Bulgaria with 1 billion cubic meters of gas storage.
