NYT: Voters in Bulgaria are more apathetic

Bulgaria has developed an unusually acute democratic deficit marked by increased voter apathy, states a New York Times article just one month before the next parliamentary elections.

The publication continues that some fear the emergence of an authoritarian leader, as in Slovakia. "I'm afraid that after so many elections, people will be ready to say: 'Great, we finally have a strong, stable leadership,'" Vesela Cherneva, deputy director of the European Council for Foreign Policy, is quoted as saying.

The system, says Oxford professor Dimitar Bechev, "is very elastic, as we have discovered in the last few years," and "generates corruption and clientelism, so there is no critical mass to change the status quo."

Ministry of Health introduces measures against whooping cough

Starting tomorrow (May 9) and lasting possibly until July 31, temporary anti-epidemic measures are being introduced due to the epidemic spread of whooping cough, acting Health Minister Galya Kondeva announced today.

These include the organization of recommended whooping cough immunization for pregnant women at 27-36 weeks of gestation as well as an opportunity for babies to be vaccinated against the disease a month-and-a-half after birth.

Additionally, every Monday the regional health inspectorates will send the ministry information on the number of immunizations performed on pregnant women.

Concert and 3D mapping for Europe Day in Sofia

The city garden in Sofia (in front of Ivan Vazov theatre) will be at the center of tomorrow's celebration of Europe Day, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the admission of 10 countries to the EU.

The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. with a presentation of customs and foods from Cyprus, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic and will continue from 5:30 p.m. followed by a concert.

Starting at 9 p.m., the facade of the National Art Gallery will be a screen for the 3D mapping performance named Your Voice. Organized by the European Parliament and the European Commission, it is part of the LUNAR Festival of Lights. Sofia is among 60 European cities taking part in the performance, which aims to encourage voters to turn out to vote for the European Parliament - a month before the actual election.
