Bulgaria's inflation Rate Will Meet Eurozone Criteria

Between June and September, Bulgaria will be able to meet the minimum inflation criteria, set for Eurozone entry, Finance Minister Assen Vassilev said at a conference on the currency union.

"Inflation is falling rather quickly, being 3.3 percent this month. It is below the reference value we need to be accepted in the eurozone," said Vassilev, quoted by BTA, but made the stipulation that the indicator be monitored for 12 months back.

More Than 130,000 Jobless In 2023

A total of 132.4 thousand people were unemployed in 2023, with the majority being men - 54.1%, the National Statistical Institute reported.

Of all the unemployed, 14.4% have a university degree, 53.8% have higher education, and 31.8% have a primary or lower education.

More than half have been unemployed for more than a year. A total of 37,000 people between the ages of 15 and 64 self-identify as being "discouraged", i.e. people who do not work but are not looking for employment.

This Winter Was Warmest Ever

Last winter was the warmest for the last 136 years in Bulgaria, according to data from leading climatologist Simeon Matev.

February was the warmest for the last 58 years in Bulgaria, with the average monthly anomaly for the country being more than 5 degrees. Along the Danube and Balkans region the anomaly reached more than 7 degrees.
