Sofia Average Salary Reaches 3000 Levs

According to the latest data of the national statistics, released during the week, the average monthly salary in the Sofia city region reached 2,999 levs. The only other regional city where the average salary is over 2,000 levs is Vratsa - and that is because Kozloduy NPP is located there.

The year-on-year figures show that wage growth continues to outpace inflation. The data for the city of Sofia show that for 12 months the increase was 11.4% with annual inflation in December of 4.7%. This is also valid for the other regions - in Plovdiv the salary increase for the year was 10.61%, in Varna - by 12.4%, in Burgas - by 13.2%, in Veliko Tarnovo - by 12.84%, in Vratsa - by 6.65%.

Migrant Pressure in 2023 Broke Records

According to border police management, migrant influx pressure is at record levels. 2023 was the worst year for illegal migration over the past decade, according to the Border Police General Directorate. The director of the service, Anton Zlatanov, revealed that in 2023, 180 512 attempts to enter Bulgaria illegally were prevented along the Bulgarian-Turkish border. This is an increase of almost 11% on an annual basis.

An improvement has been noticed in recent months, however, as for the period January 1 - February 15 of last year there were 8519 attempts to illegally cross the border, whereas for the same period this year there were 3023. A decrease in the number of illegal migrants detained inside the country has also been noticed - 640 in 2023 and 189 this year.

However, Zlatanov cited the more than 700 vacancies in the Border Police as a major obstacle in the fight against illegal entry.

Bojanov Was Heavily Linked To Police

MP Boyko Rashkov has conceded he was unable to stop information leaking from the police to different "outsiders" during his stint as interior minister from 2021 to 2022. He has made the claims in order to shed light on Martin Bojanov - "the Notary", who was killed on the last day of January this year and his relations with the Bulgarian prosecution and police.

According to Rashkov, someone in the ministry at that time - his deputies and/or the then head of the main directorate Combating Organized Crime Kalin Stoyanov (now Minister of the Interior), had leaked information to Bojanov.

Rashkov also stated that former chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev was among the visitors to the private SS club of Bojanov, as well as other politicians.
