Geshev-Sarafov war continues

The deputy chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov, whose resignation was requested by the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev, has filed a report against Geshev for allegedly perpetrating a crime. He claims that Geshev committed an offense by bringing an unknown Israeli individual to the place of the alleged terror attack against him two weeks ago when the "expert" in question was not authorized to be there.

Geshev's resignation was also sought by the prosecutor's collegium last week, the same body that had defended him for years.

Meanwhile, a recording of a conversation between Geshev and Sarafov has been leaked to a famous tabloid. Geshev and Sarafov can be heard talking to each other, reaffirming that "they are friends" in an exchange that was believed to have occurred last week.

Inflation falls in April

Inflation continued to slow down in April, registering 11.6% on an annual basis. The drop from 14% in March is the most significant since the index started falling this year. The difference is mainly due to lower fuel and food prices. However, inflation is still several times above the normal levels and is forecast to remain high throughout 2023.

The decline in the index does not mean that overall prices are going down, but only that their prices are not rising as fast as before. This is partly due to the high benchmark that it is being compared to, as last year at this time the price index was already moving up at double-digit rates.

GDP growth forestalls recession

In the first quarter of 2023, Bulgaria's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2% from the first quarter of the previous year and by 0.4% from the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to the spring forecast of the European Commission, the Bulgarian economy will slow down to 1.5% this year. The same is expected for both consumption and export. This morning the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development slightly raised its forecast for the growth of the Bulgarian economy to 1.3% for this year.

NSI reports that the rate of consumption is growing by 2.8%, and the gross fixed capital increased by 5.2%.
