Borissov outlines deadline for WCC-DB

After almost a week of silence and discord between the negotiating teams of GERB and WCC-DB, GERB chairman Boyko Borissov declared at a press conference that "there is a way back". His party still wanted to have a government with its previous partner, but "the question is how will both sides change course" after the high tensions of the past week, he said.

On Tuesday GERB presented a proposed government to President Radev but WCC-DB later complained that they had not been consulted over its composition. WCC co-leader Kiril Petkov had also questioned the credentials of Mariya Gabriel, GERB's proposed candidate for prime minister, in the light of the developments.

Borissov, meanwhile, said that the path to reconciliation now hinges on WCC-DB "asking for forgiveness" from Gabriel. He also set a new deadline for an understanding between the parties in the coalition - Friday, March 22.

Peevski attacks DB over stalled negotiations

MRF leader Delyan Peevski accused DB's Hristo Ivanov of being the reason for the failure of the government negotiations. "All this is being done by only one person, and that is Hristo Ivanov. He wants elections, because for him it makes no sense to stay any longer. He sees that he cannot control the judicial power and that is why he wants elections," Peevski told journalists on the sidelines of parliament.

Ivanov and Peevski clashed less than a month ago after WCC-DB published a joint governance memorandum with GERB, which called for a mechanism to raise, discuss and vote on appointments to regulators and the judiciary. Peevski then accused Ivanov of trying to control the prosecutor's office and the judiciary and to appoint his own people.

Bulgarians are happier, survey shows

Bulgaria has moved sharply upwards in the world ranking for happiness over the past ten years. Compared to the results of 2013, in the World Happiness Report 2024, published today, the country has climbed an impressive 63 positions and is behind Serbia, which, with a rise of 69 places, is the leading country in the world in terms of a "leap" in happiness.

Data from the survey is provided by the American sociological agency Gallel, and focuses on how different age groups feel in individual countries. Their conclusion is that young Bulgarians under the age of 30 are much, much happier than the rest of their compatriots
