New units at Kozloduy NPP to cost up to 14 billion euros

Energy Minister Rumen Radev anticipates that constructing two new units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) could cost up to 14 billion euros. "I believe we can achieve a cost below this figure, while ensuring that the electricity generated will be significantly lower than the average European mix. This goal is both ambitious and entirely within our reach," he said after signing a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with the United States, which aims to facilitate technology exchange.

The process for selecting the construction company, which will partner with Westinghouse in a consortium to build the reactors, is on track to conclude by the end of April, with five contenders currently in the running. A more detailed cost projection will be unveiled in March.

Farmers' discontent persists

Discontent persists within the agricultural sector, alongside ongoing calls for Minister Kiril Vatev's resignation. Representatives from 26 agrarian organizations have voiced their opposition to the agreement brokered on Sunday evening at the Ministry of Agriculture. These groups have disassociated themselves from the signatories of the agreement and are steadfast in their demand for Vatev's departure.

The agreement, intended to end the current protests marked by blockades at 26 road junctions which began early last week, has failed to quell the unrest. With a warning issued for Tuesday, February 13, protesting farmers have signaled a potential escalation, indicating that the demonstrations might adopt a non-peaceful nature for which they will accept full responsibility.

2 Bulgarians wanted in Illegal Cross-Europe Flight Case

A nationwide manhunt is underway for two Bulgarians involved in a case where a small plane illegally flew over at least seven European countries before landing at the abandoned Bukhovtsi airport near Targovishte in mid-2022.

The investigation, led by the District Prosecutor's Office in Vidin, focuses on unauthorized country entry, with the plane entering Bulgaria through Vidin. The Border Police Department in Bregovo has taken over the investigation. Although two individuals have been charged, their identities remain undisclosed to prevent them from fleeing. Preliminary evidence suggests the plane was legally purchased.
