State to check farmers for misuse of subsidies

The Food Safety Agency (FSA) and the Agriculture State Fund have begun inspecting farms where more than 10 large ruminant animals (cattle and buffalo) are raised, the Ministry of Agriculture reported today.

The goal is to eliminate so-called virtual animals - cases of animals that are transferred from farm to farm while control authorities conduct animal countings. These inflated figures for the number of animals are then used by multiple farms to receive higher state subsidies.

MIA investigates footage of violent police officer

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) is investigating a police officer after a threatening clip filmed by residents of Valkosel village in the district of Blagoevgrad.

The alert was prompted by a video sent to media outlets in which a police officer is seen and several threats are heard. A male voice says: "I'm going to hit you, I'm going to break your nose. Don't talk to me like that", and then adds: "What if there's a camera? I'm going to put you in the patrol car, I'm going to take you somewhere and I'll beat you there. Do you understand me?"

On television, other residents of the same village complained that this was not the first time this policeman had behaved aggressively and resorted to threats.

"A disciplinary investigation has already begun in the regional directorate of the Ministry of the Interior. The leadership of the Ministry of the Interior will not tolerate such behavior and actions by police officers," the Ministry of the Interior announced.

Holy Synod protests against NRA accounts checks

The Holy Synod does not agree that the state, in face of the National Revenue Agency, should check its accounts, an official statement says. The audit, which began last year, examines the church's corporation tax liabilities for the period 2017 to 2022.

In a letter to the NRA, the Holy Synod defined the revision as "unconstitutional and a risk to national security". One of the Synod's main objections is that income from rents should not be considered an economic activity because, it claims, those were not revenues, but only donations.
