Government waives levy on Russian gas

Sofia has officially waived the levy of BGN 20 per MWh on the transmission of Russian gas as key negotiations take place in Brno, Slovenia, over Bulgaria's entry into Schengen.

Bulgaria is likely to use the removal of the tax introduced in October as one of its last levers to win favor with Austria. Although Vienna does not rely entirely on gas supplies through Bulgaria's Turk Stream, there's enough evidence to believe that the country is dependent on Russian gas entering Europe via Bulgaria.

The news of the fee's cancellation was announced by Boyko Borissov and Kiril Petkov, with Borissov claiming that Bulgaria is "very close to Schengen".

Rumors in diplomatic circles are that the Netherlands is ready to lift its veto on Bulgaria. However, Austria has indicated it is only prepared to allow a so-called Air Schengen at present, which in practice means no passport checks at airports. Yet this is not total Schengen accession and will not address the problem of queues at borders, which plague the Bulgarian and Romanian economies.

Borissov assumes control of GERB in Sofia

GERB chairman Boyko Borissov is now taking personal charge of the party's leadership structures in Sofia, the formation's press center said on Facebook. He will be assisted in his work by Daniela Raycheva, the mayor of the district of Novi Iskar. Borissov announced the news in front of regional coordinators, municipal councilors and representatives from Sofia. Until now, the capital structure of GERB was headed by the former mayor of the Serdika region, Todor Krastev.

The announcement states that for the new team in Sofia, the leader of GERB places "a priority on representatives of Youth GERB, entrusting them with the leadership of regional structures. In addition to being regional leaders, young people will be involved in the work of local structures and as organizational secretaries, and as members of the regional managements".
