Thousands face outages from blizzard

Many villages and small towns in the southwest of Bulgaria have seen ice, bitter winds, frozen pipes and continuous power outages due to broken cables after heavy snowstorms hit the entire country this weekend. Although local municipalities have not declared a state of emergency over the past three days, all indications are that it is precisely that.

The situation is only slightly better in bigger cities where local municipalities have encouraged citizens to clean pavements in front of their homes and some large areas have been without heating for more than three days.

EU arrests Bulgarians for participating in child pornography network

Across Europe, 31 people, including two Bulgarians, have been arrested for participating in a child pornography network distributed in the encrypted chat application "Signal", France Press reported today. The arrests were made in mid-November. More than 200,000 files were discovered during the network crackdown operation.

The operation came about after a tip from the American Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Ten people were detained in Spain, 5 in Hungary, 4 in Belgium, 2 in Bulgaria and 10 in France. New arrests are pending in Finland, Romania and Ukraine.

Some of the detainees are accused of raping and corrupting minors. Among those detained are a Hungarian pediatrician, tourists who traveled to Thailand, a radio host and a former teacher.

Two thirds of Bulgarians do not consider themselves Europeans

Two in three Bulgarians do not define themselves as European, although the same proportion believe that Bulgaria's place on the geopolitical map is as a member state of the European Union, according to data from the study "National and European dimensions of the modern identity of Bulgarians".

When asked what they are proud of as Bulgarian citizens, most respondents cited the country's history (60%), as well as its traditions and customs (44.7%). Nearly 18% of respondents mentioned the possibility to travel and work around the world as citizens of an EU member state
