Minister cites 2030 as end date of coal

Bulgaria will stop producing coal-fired electricity by 2030, according to hydro and environment minister Julian Popov.

He made the prediction during the Net Zero Economy conference, organized by Capital. He added that although many did not believe that coal production would ever cease, Bulgaria was now looking at the industry's dying days.

"Without engaging any institution with such a forecast, but in my opinion, there will be no coal production in Bulgaria by 2030," he concluded.

Recent months have seen extensive protests by miners and energy workers over the diminishing role of coal.

Bulgarian citizenship could be revoked under new legislation

New legal amendments are proposed which provide for the possibility of revoking already acquired Bulgarian citizenship ( by naturalization).

The draft law proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently at the stage of public discussion. Its purpose is to allow cancellations of naturalization in the event of deliberate anti-Bulgarian acts by a person who has acquired Bulgarian citizenship.

Behavior that could cause such revocation of citizenship could include engaging in "anti-Bulgarian manifestations", including in cases of systematic and deliberate damage to the prestige of Bulgaria, Bulgarian institutions and national interests through hate speech or when committing an act of hate against the Bulgarian state, its citizens and/or Bulgarian communities abroad.

Bulgaria sends more arms to Ukraine

MP's have ratified an agreement between Bulgaria and Ukraine to provide old armored personnel carriers to Kyiv. GERB, WCC-DB, MRF and TSP voted in favor, while BSP and Vazrazhdane were against, with a total of 152 votes for and 57 against.

The agreement was signed in Sofia on August 8, 2023 and in Kyiv on November 13, 2023. It was concluded following the decision of the National Assembly of July 21, 2023 to provide additional military-technical support to Ukraine. It envisages that Bulgaria will provide Ukraine with armored transport equipment as well as spare parts for its service.

The armored personnel carriers are no longer necessary for the needs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and have been stored in the department's warehouses since the 1980s.
