Coalition tension heightens at no confidence vote

MRF chairman Delyan Peevski today warned that the coalition might not endure after today's no confidence vote was abandoned when GERB and MRF left the chamber.

The no confidence motion had been tabled by Vazrazhdane and the BSP in protest at what they described as the government's "inability to guarantee national security".

At the heart of the disagreement is WCCs bid to keep Bulgaria's temporary exemption from an EU ban on processing crude oil originating in Russia until March 1. They say that ending the derogation immediately, as GERB and MRF are requesting, would destabilize gas prices. GERB and MRF say that this deferment would only serve the Kremlin.

Peevski said that the disunity threatened the survival of the government and warned that "a pro-Putin majority" could rule Bulgaria. "I hope that colleagues will read the signs and not destroy the Euro-Atlantic parliamentary majority, which will threaten the Euro-Atlantic government, due to the coalitions they make with Vazrazhdane and the BSP," he said.

EC files claim against Bulgaria in court

A European Union Directive establishing minimum standards for crime victims from 2012 has not been fully implemented into Bulgaria's national legislation eight years after the official deadline.

The European Commission has now notified Bulgaria that it will file a claim before the Court of Justice of the European Union for the incomplete transposition of the Directive (EU Directive on Victims' Rights, Directive 2012/29/EU).

The commission will now ask the European Union Court of Justice to impose financial sanctions on Bulgaria.

Thousands protest against Bulgarian Football Federation

Legions of football fans have expressed their opposition to the leadership of the Bulgarian Football Federation at an organized protest in Sofia. It started at 5 p.m. around the Vasil Levski National Stadium. The European qualification between Bulgaria and Hungary is due to start at the facility at 7 p.m., but without spectators.

With obscene chants directed at the president of the BFF Borislav Mihailov after 5.25 p.m., a large group of Levski fans positioned themselves in front of sector A of the National Stadium.

Fans' discontent has been fueled in recent weeks by the behavior of BFF and the national team's losing streak, which has led to demands for resignation during Premier League matches
