Sofia might face fresh elections in 3 months

New municipal council elections in Sofia may have to be called if a chairman of the Municipal Council is not elected within three months, acting mayor Vasil Terziev warned today. "I strongly hope that this will not happen, because it will mean a complete blockade of the capital's Municipality, and the budget for next year must be adopted," he said at a briefing.

Terziev's comments followed the failure to elect a chairman at yesterday's first session of the SMC and further evidence today that parties in the Council will likely not come to an agreement.

Bulgaria's population could be below 5 million by 2075

Bulgaria's population could fall to 4.97 million by 2075 under a likely projection published by the National Statistical Institute (NSI). A little over a quarter of the population would be aged 65 and over under this projection..

The NSI published three scenarios for population projections until 2090 depending on expected socio-economic development. The one cited above is defined as "realistic" and complies with the EU's regulatory requirements for the demographic and socio-economic development of member states.

If demographic development takes place favorably, the population will be slightly over 5.1 million people. In the case of unfavorable processes, the forecast for the same year is a population of just under 4.8 million people. According to NSI data, on December 31, 2022, the population was 6.44 million.

EU hands out free heat pumps and air conditioners in Sofia

The Metropolitan Municipality is continuing to replace old stoves with environmentally friendly appliances, despite the relative lack of interest in recent years. The estimated cost of the program, which stems from an EU initiative, is 50.4 million levs.

Households and companies, owners or co-owners of dwellings in one-story and multi-story residential buildings that are heated by stoves, boilers and fireplaces with wood and/or coal, will have the right to apply.

The municipality will collect offers from candidate contractors until November 23.
