Bulgaria's Schengen entry up for decision in December

The Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union is planning a vote in December on admitting Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, Euronews TV reported today.

The candidacies of Bulgaria and Romania were last voted on at the council of interior ministers in December 2022 when the Netherlands and Austria vetoed Bulgaria's entry, and Vienna raised a red flag over Romania.

The admission of new countries to the Schengen area, in which citizens of the countries can travel freely without border controls, must be unanimously approved by the Council of Justice and Home Affairs, in which the interior ministers meet.

The December council meeting is scheduled for December 5th and 6th.

Prosecutor uncovers breaches in 70 politician-related trials

A prosecutor's office probe has found delays or violations in more than 70 pending pre-trial proceedings.

The alleged crimes were committed by magistrates, persons with immunity, and members of the Council of Ministers, explained chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov at a special hearing. He was invited to explain disciplinary violations, delays and inaction on the part of prosecutors and investigators.

Sarafov said that he has submitted materials to the prosecutor's collegium in order to sanction prosecutors and investigators, including the administrative head of the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office Nevena Zartova, and prosecutor Maxim Kolev.

Prosecutor Kolev has delayed ruling on 98 files, an intolerable "systemic delay in cases" according to Sarafov.
