Brussels to assist Bulgaria over Black Sea disaster

The European Commission is to provide Bulgarian authorities with data from the Copernicus satellite system to assess the situation in areas affected by catastrophic floods in the southern Black Sea coastal area earlier this week. The move follows a request from Sofia.

Usually, when a request for assistance in the field of civil protection is received, the European Commission turns to all EU countries for help and the response in such cases is immediate.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the disaster is still being assessed. So far, two men and two women have died in the disaster. The floods have also damaged 12 bridges, whose repair will cost between 20 and 30 million BGN.

EV sales explode by 156%

The total number of electric vehicle sales exceeded 1000 cars in the January-July period this year, a rise of 156% compared to the same period last year, when they only numbered 405. Although still small in value, the share of EV sales in all new car sales reached a record 4.95%, up from 2.33% in 2022.

The trend though is also seeing an increase in regular car sales. The car market in the country grew by 20.8%, after almost 21,000 new passenger cars were sold from January to July.

Although they're gaining popularity, EV's still make up an insignificant percentage of all owned cars in the state. According to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), by July, registered e-cars in the country reached 9,038, which is still less than half a percent (0.30%) of all 2.97 million registered passenger cars.

Bulgaria's Oscar entry agreed

Stefan Komandarev's film Blaga's Lessons is the Bulgarian entry for the 96th Academy Awards for International Feature Film. The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the Selection Committee for the Bulgarian nomination.

The film tells the story of a retired and recently widowed teacher, Blaga, who falls victim to a telephone scam. This is also the turning point in her life, as she is left with no savings and no money for her late husband's funeral and subsequent care of his grave. Slowly, the principles of this once honest woman begin to unravel.
