EP to request Bulgaria and Romania's admission to Schengen by the end of 2023

At its last meeting in Strasbourg before the summer recess, the European Parliament will vote at the beginning of July on a new call for the admission of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, the parliamentary committee on petitions decided today.

The decision was adopted with 25 votes "for", and zero "against" votes and abstentions. MEPs are expected to call on the EU Council to approve the two countries' accession to Schengen by the end of the year.

Bulgaria and Romania have fulfilled the requirements, the draft resolution states. It expresses regret that on December 8 last year EU countries did not reach unanimity about Bulgaria and Romania's entry in the zone. It ends with a statement that the enlargement of Schengen will only make the EU stronger.

50 migrants found in Sofia village

A total of 46 illegal migrants were found in a house in the Sofia village of Kokalyane, BNR reported earlier today.

All are men and have identified themselves as citizens of Morocco, Syria and Pakistan. Eleven of them are minors. The metropolitan police are conducting pre-trial proceedings on the case. According to initial information, the house where the migrants were found was rented out.

Beijer Ref buys air conditioner retailer Kondex

Swedish distributor of refrigeration equipment Beijer Ref is entering the Bulgarian market by acquiring 70% of the air conditioner dealer Kondex. The deal was approved by the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC), but the price has yet to be announced. The transfer is expected to be completed this summer.

According to the agreement Bejer Ref will buy 70% of the capital of Kondex, and current owner Lyubomir Petkov will remain a partner with a minority share. An option to transfer the remaining 30% is included. The purpose of the transaction is for Beijer Ref to enter the local market for heating, ventilation and air conditioning products, thereby expanding its global market presence.
