Geshev out, Sarafov in

The head of the national investigation services, Borislav Sarafov, is the new caretaker chief prosecutor. This was decided by the prosecutor's collegium with 8 votes in favor and one against.

The new appointment became possible after President Rumen Radev signed the decree for Ivan Geshev's release on June 15. Three of Geshev's deputies had agreed to participate in the contest for the top position: Sarafov, Desislava Pironeva and Daniela Masheva.

The Prosecution College also accepted that the decision of the Judicial Council can be appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court but allowed preliminary implementation of the decision. Hence Sarafov is now acting chief prosecutor.

Sarafov demanded the resignation of former chief prosecutor Geshev and had contradicted his former boss's account of the alleged terrorist attack against him in May. This happened despite Sarafov and Geshev once being considered close allies.

Bulgaria to help to supply arms to Ukraine

Defense Minister Todor Tagarev announced today that Bulgaria will actively seek to join the coalition supplying Ukraine with ammunition.

This represents a significant shift in Bulgaria's position towards the European Defense Agency (EDA) project which works to supply ammunition for its own needs, and also for Ukraine.

In May, EU countries finalized a deal to send weapons to Kyiv by March next year. Following this, the EDA agreed to secure the ammunition. Bulgaria had refused to be part of the agreement while President Radev's appointed caretaker cabinet was in charge.

No more state oil

Parliament today approved in the first and second reading changes to the state reserve law, which closes the State Oil Company. A total of 190 MP's were in favor, while none spoke against or abstained.

"We are canceling something that was never implemented which meand we are canceling nothing," said chairman Rosen Zhelyazkov before the vote, summarizing the findings of discussions on the topic.

The state oil company was established in 2020 by the Prime Minister at the time, and leader of GERB, Boyko Borissov. The idea was that the state would build a chain of petrol stations that would sell fuel at a minimal markup and thus influence price levels in private establishments as well.
