SJC in U-turn over Geshev

Six members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), who had requested the resignation of Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev, unexpectedly decided to terminate the procedure. The twist comes a day after parliament voted in the new government, and GERB no longer needs to prove to PP-DB its determination to remove Geshev.

Discussions on the initial motion were expected to begin today. Instead, the SJC terminated proceedings on May 12 that sought the Chief Prosecutor's removal. For now, the procedure for Geshev's removal is still open. But now it is on the basis of the second proposal submitted on May 22 by four of the same petitioners on account of Geshev's call for "political garbage" to be removed from parliament.

At the same time, it comes against the background of Geshev pressurizing prominent representatives of the main political forces in parliament, but also of investigations against members of the prosecutor's collegium who submitted the motion for removal.

European Commission warns Bulgaria over waste

Bulgaria is set to miss all the waste treatment targets it is obliged to fulfill under European law, according to a European Commission report published Thursday.

According to the European Directives on packaging and landfill waste, member countries must recycle 55% of their household waste and 65% of their packaging by 2025, and limit waste to 10% in open landfills by 2035. Bulgaria looks unlikely to meet either target.

As of 2020, according to the last officially published data, in Bulgaria only 31.5% of household waste and 61% of packaging are recycled, and 61% of garbage is deposited in landfills. Over the past five years, household waste recycling has increased by 8.4% and landfill disposal has decreased by 8%. At these rates, Bulgaria will not be able to reach the levels required by European legislation in time.

CEECAT Capital buys 23% stake in Telelink

European fund CEECAT Capital has acquired almost 23% of the Telelink Business Services Group during an auction, in which its largest shareholders offered 25% to the stock exchange. This was done via the Luxembourg-registered CEECAT company - SEET Investment Holdings Sarl, which on June 5 bought 2,872 million shares at a price of BGN 9.5, a transaction of BGN 27.3 million.

The largest number of shares was sold by Lyubomir Minchev, who is the majority shareholder and founder of Telelink BSG and sold 1,842 million shares. His partner Ivo Evgeniev sold 4.01% of the capital (501,662 shares at BGN 9.5), for which there is a disclosure announcement in x3news. The rest are most likely from Spas Shopov, who also held 4% before the transaction.

After the deal, CEECAT Capital became the second largest investor in Telelink BSG. The company is a system integrator that deals with the construction and maintenance of information systems for communications.
