TISP deputy sparks outrage over rebuke to doctors
Toshko Yordanov, deputy chairman of the There Is Such a People party, has triggered a national uproar after making derogatory comments about Bulgarian doctors, particularly young medics.
Speaking in Parliament, he told them to leave for countries like Italy if they wanted better pay. He also warned that the government could import foreign doctors for lower wages. His tone and threats sparked an immediate backlash from both the medical community and the public. After widespread criticism on social media, Yordanov issued an apology, claiming his remarks were emotional and taken out of context. The incident reignited tensions over working conditions and respect for healthcare professionals in Bulgaria.
Speedy maintains strong market presence
After briefly becoming the most liquid company on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange, courier firm Speedy returned the title to Shelly, but still boasts a market capitalization of more than 1.08 billion levs. On July 1, Speedy's shares rose by 8% following the announcement of a record dividend payout, 83% of its 2024 profit, or 6.2 levs gross per share. The company reported revenues topping 518 million levs in 2024, with profits exceeding 40 million levs, and continues its 12-year tradition of annual dividend distribution.
Despite a dip in share price from its October 2024 peak of 226 levs, the stock rebounded above 200 levs after the dividend news, yielding a 12-month return of nearly 13%. Early 2025 results show continued growth, with a 6% revenue increase and a 10% profit rise in Q1 compared to the previous year.
Prosecution rejects case over Patriarch
Bulgarian prosecutors have dismissed a case against Patriarch Daniil shortly after it had expressed concerns over his alleged espionage for a foreign body. The case was brought to national attention after a tip-off from MP Kristina Petkova.
But the prosecution announced it would not initiate pre-trial proceedings as there was no evidence of a crime. It added that the complaint was based on vague assumptions about potential future actions by Bulgarian citizens studying in foreign religious institutions. The letter from Metropolitan Daniil to fellow clergy, which prompted the complaint, was deemed non-criminal. The ruling emphasized that freedom of religion and belief is constitutionally protected, and the state cannot interfere in the internal affairs of religious communities.
The prosecutor also noted that even though Russia had labeled Bulgaria an "unfriendly" country, there is no legal barrier to prevent Bulgarians studying in Russian theological institutions.
