Half of Bulgarians oppose joining the eurozone
A week before the European Commission is set to release its assessment of Bulgaria's readiness to join the eurozone, public opinion in the country remains sharply divided - about 50% oppose the euro, while 43% support it. Across the rest of the EU, support for the common currency has reached record highs, especially in the eurozone, where 83% of citizens are in favor.
In Bulgaria, polarization has deepened amid vocal anti-euro campaigns, widespread disinformation, and a delayed government communication effort, despite a dedicated budget. Recent surveys confirm the split, with many Bulgarians still feeling poorly informed about the upcoming transition.
Leisure travel drives 1.2% rise in Bulgarian trips
Between January and March, nearly 1.1 million Bulgarians traveled, with 75.7% staying within the country, 20% traveling abroad, and 4.3% doing both. The number of travelers rose by 1.2% year-on-year, according to Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute.
Most trips were for leisure, accounting for 48.8% of domestic and 70.6% of international travel. A large majority-87.3%-of personal trips were made independently, with 92.1% of domestic and 67.7% of foreign trips not involving prior reservations, as the data indicate.
Chakarov pulls appeal, MRF case ends
Bulgaria's Supreme Court of Cassation has closed the case concerning changes in the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) after Djevdet Chakarov withdrew his appeal.
The case had been initiated by Chakarov following a refusal to register amendments removing Delyan Peevski from leadership positions within the party. Shortly before resigning, Chakarov submitted a request to terminate the proceedings and fully withdrew his complaint. The court confirmed the case was officially closed following his request.
