Democratic Bulgaria calls for the speaker's resignation

Democratic Bulgaria has called for the resignation of Parliament Speaker Natalia Kiselova. MPs Bozhidar Bozhanov and Atanas Atanasov said she blocked yet another attempt to question Interior Minister Daniel Mitov and eight police officers about a smuggling ring in Plovdiv.

They claim that this shows that "the police and prosecutor's cover-up is turning political," and Kiselova is helping to hide the case. The party is now drafting a formal request for her early dismissal and plans to seek support from other parliamentary groups.

The deficit remains at 1.9 billion leva as of April

In the first three months of 2025, Bulgaria registered a budget deficit of 1.9 billion levs, but the gap stopped widening in April. This was helped by strong tax revenues and a 550 million levs contribution from the central bank. However, revenue growth so far (7.7%) is well below the planned 28%, raising concerns about meeting annual targets. Meanwhile, spending continues to outpace revenues, particularly in social payments and capital expenditures, and although the Finance Ministry has revised its economic outlook upward, reaching the projected budget deficit of 3% of GDP by year-end remains ambitious.

Online shoppers in Bulgaria down 7% to 3.1 million

In 2024, 3.1 million people in Bulgaria shopped online out of a total of 4.8 million internet users. Their number has dropped by about 7% compared to the previous year, but this does not necessarily indicate a contraction in internet sales or a significant decline in online retailers' turnover. However, the decrease does point to increased consumer caution, linked to political instability and fears surrounding the introduction of the euro. These findings are summarized in the second edition of the nationally representative survey "The Pulse of Online Shopping in Bulgaria 2025", conducted by Market Links for Enterprise magazine.
