Inflation remains at 4%, barely meets euro criterion

After climbing for several months, inflation in March froze at its February level - 4% on an annual basis, according to national statistics.

The average annual inflation in Bulgaria, measured according to the European methodology which is used to assess the eurozone, amounted to 2.7% - exactly as much as the floating criterion in the same month, without exceeding it. Thus, in practice, Bulgaria has been covering the price criterion for the euro for two months now, albeit by a hair's breadth, but without the need to make exceptions.

Sofia public transport employees protest

Union members in Sofia's public transport blocked the capital's main junctions today and warned of an imminent strike, which they hope will grow into a national one. Today, their demands for a 400 levs increase in salaries were not accepted by the Ministry of Finance and the Sofia Municipality.

The protesters announced their intention after three meetings in the Sofia Municipality failed to yield any results, with a salary increase of only 100 levs being proposed. However, more than 7,000 people working in the system are demanding a minimum of 400 levs increase in their salaries.

At the moment, the municipality's operational management is considering a larger salary increase only for drivers. Deputy Mayor for Finance Ivan Vassilev told the protesters that if an increase is undertaken for everyone equally, the budget could only stretch to 100 levs, which the trade unionists reject.
