MRF headed for elections?

The split within Ahmed Dogan's MRF party became public after Yudjel Atilla, a close ally of the honorary chairman, distanced himself from formal leader Dzhevdet Chakarov. Atilla accused party officials of engaging in "fratricidal warfare" and called for an urgent National Conference to elect young and untainted leaders. His criticism, shared in the Facebook group "I Support Ahmed Dogan," included a message to Chakarov and Dzheyhan Ibramov: "With you at the helm, I'm done! It's time for a National Conference."

The statement coincided with the MRF parliamentary group's refusal to back government candidates for key regulatory positions and rising tensions over the party's role in the ruling coalition. Atilla's remarks further highlight internal disputes linked to unresolved appointments and lingering corruption accusations against key figures in the party.

EPPO launches investigation against Georgieva

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has launched an administrative investigation into potential misconduct by Bulgarian European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva, according to a statement issued on Wednesday evening.

European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi has informed the European Parliament, the EU Council, and the European Commission, with the investigation focused on assessing Georgieva's independence. A different European prosecutor has taken over the case to ensure impartiality.

The announcement comes amidst a smear campaign targeting Georgieva, which began shortly after her February interview with Capital, where she discussed institutional resistance to EU investigations into large-scale misuse of European funds. Allegations resurfaced that Georgieva had ties to Petyo "The Euro," a former investigator turned corruption broker, though previous probes into such claims were quietly dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Free second degrees for those interested

Starting in 2026, the state will begin financing second university degrees under a proposed amendment to the Higher Education Act introduced by GERB-SDS lawmakers.

Currently, the law prohibits state funding for students pursuing a second degree of the same or lower qualification level, allowing second degrees only through paid tuition.

The draft bill seeks to eliminate this restriction, enabling graduates to pursue additional degrees at the reduced tuition fees offered for state-funded programs. For instance, while a bachelor's degree in Regional Development at Sofia University costs 600 levs annually for state-funded students, the fee for paid tuition is 3,300 euros per year.
