Extension of mining concession until 2041
The copper mining company Elatsite Med, part of the Geotechmin group, will continue operations until at least 2041 after the government approved a concession extension on Wednesday. The current contract was set to expire in 2031, but proven additional reserves allow the company to mine for another 10 years. The new agreement, which awaits the Minister of Energy's signature, will enable long-term planning and investments estimated at 1.2 billion levs.
The concession area will expand by over 5,000 decares to a total of 21,800 decares, aligning with the company's mining development plan. Additionally, the concession fee has been adjusted to comply with current legislation. The extension process took over two years, following the company's request in 2022. Originally, the mine was expected to close in 2006, but ongoing exploration and improved extraction technologies have repeatedly extended its operational life.
