Government creates center for defense innovation

The government is creating a center for defense innovation, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced after yesterday's security council meeting. He pointed out that Bulgaria's capabilities in this area must be upgraded. In this way, he said, Bulgaria would be able to partner with other NATO member states more effectively.

No further details were announced. Currently, the Ministry of Defense has a Defense Institute, which is engaged in development activities in the interest of national security, although their exact nature is unclear.

Zhelyazkov noted that the upcoming meeting of the European Council in Brussels tomorrow will consider the new financial mechanisms that will be used to boost security in Europe.

Coal provided 40% of electricity in February

This February was the coldest since 2012, 2 degrees lower than the average. In other words, the Bulgarian winter reminded us what it means for the energy system to have really cold weather and what the consequences are - back to coal.

One of the most critical indicators of the cold is the price of electricity, which rose to an average of 295 BGN/MWh. This represents a 10% increase on a monthly basis and the highest average value since November. On an annual basis, however, electricity prices in the first two months of 2025 have doubled.

The biggest winners from the cold are the country's coal-fired power plants, which were the largest source of electricity - 40%. Due to high electricity prices, thermal power plants operated at high speeds for the second consecutive month.
