National Bank demands protection after Vazrazhdane storms building

A visit by deputies from Vazrazhdane to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) today forced the bank's management to issue a reminder that such actions are forbidden under Bulgarian and European law.

"We call on the parliament and other competent institutions to support with all the rigor of the law the right of the BNB and other independent institutions to exercise their statutory mandate without political pressure," the BNB's position reads.

Before noon, activists from Vazrazhdane came to the bank to request a meeting with Governor Dimitar Radev, but they were denied. Leader Kostadin Kostadinov claimed that his supporters heard that representatives of the International Monetary Fund had come to help "falsify data on the budget deficit and inflation" and they were trying to thwart this.

Sofia Airport has a new name

President Rumen Radev officially changed the name of Sofia Airport today. Its new name will now be Vasil Levski Airport - Sofia.

The idea of changing the name of the capital's airport had been discussed since 2009, but none of the proposed changes were ever implemented. Nearly 4 months ago, scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences proposed the change during a meeting at the Ministry of Transport.

The former acting Minister Krasimira Stoyanova welcomed the idea and promised to start working on preparing a statement that would contain a financial framework and specific steps for it to be enacted. However, no information on the subject had been reported since.
