Sweden releases Bulgarian ship Vezhen

Swedish authorities have released the Maltese-flagged Bulgarian ship Vezhen, which was suspected of damaging an underwater fiber-optic cable between Latvia and Sweden on January 26, Reuters and the Associated Press reported today.

"The investigation clearly shows that this was not a case of sabotage," the Swedish prosecutor's office said. "It was found that a combination of weather conditions and deficiencies in the equipment and seafaring skills of the crew contributed to the cable being cut," the statement said.

Bulgarian shipping company Navibulgar (Bulgarian Maritime Fleet) denied allegations that one of its ships had deliberately cut the cable. Recent months have seen a spate of incidents involving the cutting of data cables in the Baltic Sea. They are believed to be linked to the Russian fleet of tankers that help the country circumvent imposed sanctions and continue to receive oil revenues.
