The day in 3 news: Joint Governance Council mulls 2025 Budget; Fertilizers struggle amid agricultural woes; Burgas vies to be European Capital of Culture 2032

To budget or not to budget

The Joint Governance Council is holding its second meeting today to discuss proposals for the 2025 state budget. Coalition partners from GERB, BSP, "There Is Such a People," and Ahmed Dogan's faction within DPS will review the draft budget, which Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova has pledged to submit to Parliament by February 14.

The session will once again take place in Parliament. On Friday, the council will reconvene to address appointments for deputy ministers, regional governors, and deputy regional governors.

Fertilizers sell less as 2024 problems spill over

Difficulties in agriculture last year affected fertilizer demand, reducing revenues for manufacturers. Coupled with higher raw material costs, this led to shrinking profit margins, according to Agropolychim. The company, now holding a 24.03% stake in Neochim through its subsidiary Rhea Ventures, commands 70-80% of the local market along with Neochim.

While fertilizer prices on the global market are expected to rise, boosting the competitiveness of local products, challenges in 2024-such as low grain prices in the Black Sea region and drought-induced low yields-prompted farmers to cut costs, including reducing fertilizer purchases. Local fertilizer prices have dropped, influenced by both reduced demand and falling international prices, particularly in large markets like India and China.

Culture is a capital goal for Burgas

Burgas will apply to become the European Capital of Culture in 2032, as announced by the city's press office. The Municipal Council has unanimously approved the establishment of the "Burgas 2032" Foundation, which will lead the campaign for the title. Mayor Dimitar Nikolov stated that the city has the necessary qualities to win, emphasizing the importance of thorough preparation and dedication to the application process.

In recent years, Burgas has hosted numerous cultural events, supported by projects like the modernization of the NHK Cultural Center, the establishment of a Contemporary Art Center housing the city library, and activities at landmarks such as St. Anastasia Island, Chengene Skele, and Aquae Calidae.
