Most Bulgarians believe parties are under foreign influence

One in five Bulgarians believes that all Bulgarian political parties are subject to foreign forces, according to a new study for the Open Society Institute Sofia conducted last November. A total of 65% of respondents believe that at least half of the political forces are affected by foreign influence. However, "interference" is not assessed as wholly negative because for about a third of voters the pivotal factor is its context.

This belief contributes to the low esteem in which political parties are held but does not deter voter participation. In fact, university graduates are motivated to vote precisely to prevent those promoting Russian influence from coming to power.

Bulgarian BLD enters the Polish housing market

Bulgarian construction firms often enter foreign markets in former Soviet republics, as well as Asia, Africa and, of course, the Balkans. Yet they rarely move west. But construction and investment company BLD is bucking the trend by entering the international market in Poland. Within a month, the company, one of the largest residential investors in Sofia, will start the Ivory project - its first residential building in Warsaw. It has also finalized the purchase of a plot for a second site and is negotiating a third.

The plans are for the new Polish company to reach a scale of 150-200 apartments per year in the medium term, the same as the company is currently building in Bulgaria. Here, BLD is part of the largest local real estate group - AG Capital, and has constructed 11 buildings with 1,500 apartments over the past decade.
