Peevski calls for zero VAT on bread and 9% for restaurants
Peevski's MRF New Beginning will back the retention of measures exempting bread and flour from VAT while maintaining the 9% VAT rate for the restaurant industry, Peevski announced on Facebook.
Until the end of 2024, the same scheme applied to both sectors. However, due to the failure to pass the budget for this year, the rates reverted to the standard 20% VAT for all businesses, including bread producers. So far, reports have seen an increase in bread prices of an average of 40 stotinki across the country.
"Our decision is driven by the sharp increase in the prices of bread and bakery products, which are staples for Bulgarian households. We find it unacceptable that the cost of political instability and the inability of parties to form a regular government should be borne by the people and businesses," Peevski stated.
