GERB and Democratic Bulgaria begin coalition draft agreement
After five days of negotiations, GERB and Democratic Bulgaria have agreed to begin drafting a coalition agreement. The decision was announced in a joint press release issued by both parties.
The agreement will reflect the outcomes of the sector-specific meetings held so far, as well as anti-corruption priorities and judicial reform measures. Once consensus on the agreement is achieved, talks with BSP and There Is Such a People can begin.
The biggest question at this stage is whether-and what-amendments to the Judicial System Act will be proposed by the leading political force, and whether the emerging majority will attempt to block the appointment of Borislav Sarafov as Chief Prosecutor. This condition has been set by WCC as a prerequisite for joining the negotiations.
Repairs on Hemus motorway pose traffic jam risks ahead of Christmas
Repairs on two tunnels along the Hemus Motorway pose significant risks of major traffic congestion during the Christmas and New Year travel period. Due to extensive renovation work, the Sofia-bound tube of the Praveshki Hanove tunnel will remain closed until July 21. Similarly, the Topli Dol tunnel's section toward Sofia is under repair until June 3.
To ease traffic flow, the Road Infrastructure Agency has announced changes in traffic management for the two tunnels from December 20 to January 6, accommodating the heavy holiday traffic.
December 20, 21, 23, and 24: Two lanes will be open in the direction of Varna through the Topli Dol and Praveshki Hanove tunnels. Traffic heading toward Sofia will be redirected via alternative routes.
January 4, 5, and 6: Two lanes will operate toward Sofia as traffic heading back to the capital is expected to intensify. Vehicles traveling to Varna will be rerouted to bypass roads.
American fuel to be used in Kozloduy NPP's 6th reactor
Bulgaria has taken a significant step toward replacing Russian nuclear fuel at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. The plant and the American company Westinghouse have signed an agreement to license a new fuel assembly project for the 6th reactor. This marks the beginning of replacing Russian fuel with American fuel in the second operating unit, starting in 2028.
So far, the transition to non-Russian fuel has only been implemented in the 5th reactor, where 25% of the assemblies are now powered by American nuclear fuel, operating alongside the remaining Russian ones. However, no concrete steps had been taken for licensing and fuel replacement in the 6th reactor until now, as it underwent another refueling with Russian fuel in November, leaving enough for three more reload cycles.
