Chemist Evelina Slavcheva becomes President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has appointed its first female president in its 155-year history. This is chemist Evelina Slavcheva, who was voted by the General Assembly of the scientific institution with 81 votes, while the other candidate - microbiologist Hristo Naydensky, received 19 votes.

Slavcheva is the founder and head of the Hydrogen Systems with Polymer Electrolyte Section at the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES). From 2012 to 2015 she was the Chair of the Scientific Council of the IEES and its Director from 2015 to 2023. Since 2024, she has been Head of the Hydrogen Energy Systems Department at the Institute.

The term of the current chairman, Julian Revalski, expires on 7 December.

3,800 old vehicles violated the ban on entering the center of Sofia on the first day

In the first 24 hours since the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in the centre of Sofia entered into force, the authorities detected 3,800 violators, Dimitar Petrov, Director of Traffic Management and Analysis of Sofia Municipality told National TV (BNT).

Violators will be sanctioned only once a day, no matter how many times they enter the zone. "If the next day they enter with the same car - they will be sanctioned again," Petrov explained. The capital's inspectorate will issue administrative violation acts, which will start at 50 levs.

The restriction on entry to the zone is until 28 February and does not apply to those registered with an address within the zone. If they do not have a parking sticker, they must apply at the district of residence. The boundaries of the zone can be viewed here.

EVN Bulgaria will develop its own network of electric vehicles charging stations

Over the next 1,5 years, EVN Bulgaria will build fast charging stations at 25 Billa supermarket parking sites across the country - 15 in Sofia and 10 in Plovdiv, Burgas, Asenovgrad and Nova Zagora. Their capacity will be 120 kW, they will allow simultaneous charging of two cars and the energy supplied will be guaranteed to come from renewable sources.

The equipment will be from SunGrow, one of the global leaders in renewable energy technology. The charging network will be accessed via the EVN2GO mobile app, and prices per kWh are set at 0.79 levs. The company placed its first three charging stations in Plovdiv in 2020 and a year later it expanded with one station in Varna, Smolyan and Pamporovo each. Currently, only the one at the ski resort has a capacity of 120 kW, and the rest with 22 kW.

EVN is not the first energy company to develop its charging infrastructure network. In November, Electrohold announced it has launched stations in 17 cities across the country under the Electrocharge brand and plans to bring the total number of charging points up to 500 soon.
