Vazrazhdane could be second political force

Seven parties will enter the next parliament, with two formations on the threshold, with GERB as the winner, and Vazrazhdane in second place, according to a survey by Trend agency this week.

Ahmed Dogan's Alliance for Rights and Freedoms - the breakaway from MRF - will carry more votes than Delyan Peevski, according to the poll.

Of those surveyed, 38% expressed their intention to vote. The survey also reveals that 66% of respondents expect political parties to make necessary compromises to form a government, while 19% believe that if these are too great, new elections should be held.

Radev meets U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

President Rumen Radev visited New York to meet with Jim O'Brien, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, the presidential press office announced today.

The meeting focused on the partnership between Bulgaria and the U.S. in combating corruption, ensuring the rule of law, and increasing transparency in the judicial system.

Initially, the press office mistakenly referred to O'Brien in his previous role as the head of the Office of Sanctions Coordination, including overseeing sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act. In recent years, the U.S. has imposed Magnitsky Act sanctions on several Bulgarians:

  • Judge Andon Mitalov in 2020
  • Delyan Peevski, Vasil Bozhkov, and Ilko Zhelyazkov in 2021
  • Vladislav Goranov, Rumen Ovcharov, Nikolay Malinov, and former board members of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in 2023.

BDZ launches direct fast train between Ruse and Sofia

The direct fast train between Ruse and Sofia will begin service on October 1st, the regional administration in Ruse announced. Previously, passengers traveling between the two cities had to transfer at Gorna Oryahovitsa. A direct rail connection between Ruse and Sofia last existed until 1995 with the Blue Danube express train.

The train will depart from Ruse Central Station at 6:17 a.m. and arrive at Sofia North at 12:15 p.m. From Sofia, the train will depart at 2:35 p.m. from Sofia Central Station and arrive in Ruse at 9:53 p.m. The train will feature second-hand carriages recently acquired from Germany.

This service will run on a trial basis until mid-December, after which a decision will be made on whether to continue it.
