Constitutional Court overturns changes to Constitution of Denkov's government
The Constitutional Court partially overturned the amendments to the Constitution of Bulgaria adopted in December 2023. A large portion of the texts related to judicial reform were declared unconstitutional and invalid, while the changes related to the appointment of caretaker government will remain.
The changes to the Constitution were adopted by Parliament with the help of GERB, WCC-DB and MRF. They were appealed against, however, six months ago by President Rumen Radev and other political parties.
The court's decision comes two days after the publication of the European Commission's report in which the amendments were welcomed.
New electricity subsidies
Parliament adopted a decision obliging the Council of Ministers to adopt a new subsidy mechanism for the electricity bills of businesses. The decision was passed with the votes of representatives of all political formations, after two almost identical drafts were submitted by GERB and DPS and Vazrazhdane in the energy committee.
The decision foresees a price cap of 180 levs per MWh for the unregulated market. The state will cover the energy costs of the companies above the cap depending on the energy exchange quotations.
State coal mining to go bust
The government announced that the financial situation of state-ownedcoal mining company Mini Maritsa-East is becoming alarmingly difficult. This emerged from a hearing of Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov in Parliament.
He was called to answer questions about the current financial situation of Mini Maritsa-East.
Malinov said that the mines have an accumulated loss of 237 million levs. "Coal production has almost halved, and the volume of mined land mass has fallen by more than 64 percent," he said.
