Expat money flows into Bulgaria

Bulgarians living abroad are sending more money to their homeland - following a significant drop during Covid.

In May alone, 182.1 million euro were transferred, BNB statistics show, which is a new peak. The previous record - 172.2 million euro, was reported in May 2023. During the whole of last year, emigrants' money exceeded 1.32 billion euros for the first time. It is possible that this peak will be surpassed this year.

The BNB data do not cover all the sums that Bulgarians abroad send to relatives and friends at home. They only apply to transfers via bank, fintech companies and other money services companies for which statistics are kept. It is believed that a significant percentage of funds - between 15 and 25% - arrive in cash.

Bulgaria to help Hungary amidst oil crisis

Bulgaria has offered Hungary supplies of petroleum products after Ukraine stopped the transit of crude oil from Lukoil to Hungarian refineries. The news was announced by the Foreign Ministry in Budapest.

"Although there is no direct transport link for oil between the two countries, i.e. an oil pipeline, [the Bulgarian foreign minister] has made it clear that if we need additional quantities of oil products, they can deliver them by various transfer methods," said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó, quoted by Reuters.

Earlier, he stated that there is no alternative to Russian oil supplies to Hungary via Ukraine, because the necessary infrastructure is not there.

Bulgarian tabloid changes ownership

The flagship of Bulgarian yellow tabloid journalism, pik.bg, is being sold to Svetoslav Kantarjiev. The so-called pik agency of Nedyalko Nedyalkov closed a deal with Kantarjiev who owns dozens of other yellow media websites.

The news was reported by pik.bg itself. The price is not disclosed there, but the buyer is linked to Selevkidi media group, which "supports more than 20 websites at home and abroad and has Greek ownership".

The new owner can be linked to Magnitsky-sanctioned Delyan Peevski through headlines supporting him and defaming his enemies within the MRF.
