GERB wins election on low turnout

A historically low voter turnout that undermines the foundations of democracy and will deliver a parliament with a record low representation - this is the real result of Sunday's national election. Estimates show that voters numbered around 2 million - the lowest parliamentary vote so far. For comparison, the election in 2022 recorded 2.6 million votes. All the leading parties are expected to record a shrinkage of votes.

The biggest loser is WCC-DB which dropped to third place with less than 15% (early estimates show a 50% drop). GERB came top with 24.6% of the votes, MRF comes second with 15.9%. Above the threshold are also BSP, TSP and newcomer Velichie which surprised pollsters by receiving 4.9%. All numbers are yet to be confirmed by the final protocols.

Hristo Ivanov quits

Hristo Ivanov has resigned as the leader of Yes, Bulgaria (part of WCC-DB). He announced this at a briefing at the party headquarters after the disappointing election. Ivanov was one of the key leaders in WCC-DB and a decisive figure in the rotational government with GERB.

He explained that with his decision he was taking political responsibility for the results. Ivanov added that he would not run for party leader again, and that he would give up his seat in Parliament.

"We have not made any decisions regarding the coalition format," he added, referring to the WCC-DB grouping.

Some new MEPs are known

Bulgarians also voted in European Parliament elections yesterday, the outcome of which is still inconclusive due to the slower counting of voters' preferences. However, the three new MEPs from WCC-DB are expected to be Nikola Minchev, Radan Kanev and Hristo Petrov, Dnevnik learned from sources in the coalition's headquarters.

Half of the votes for the coalition in the elections for the European Parliament went to incumbent MEP Radan Kanev (DSB quota and in fifth place on the list) and to the former speaker of the parliament Nikola Minchev (quota of We Continue the Change).

The names of the 5 MEPs from GERB are still not known. But it seems clear that one of the MEPs from Vazrazhdane will be Peter Volgin.
