Ruse and Gyurghevo connected by third Danube bridge
A third bridge over the Danube river, connecting Ruse in Bulgaria to Gyurghevo in Romania, will be included in the main European transport network. It will become just a part of the new priority Baltic Sea - Black Sea - Aegean Sea corridor, which will have an extension to Ukraine and Moldova, said acting Minister of Transport Georgi Gvozdeikov.
In addition to connecting the three seas, the new corridor will facilitate combined cargo and passenger transport flows, added the minister, who took part in the Connectivity Forum 2024 in Burgas.
Gvozdeikov stressed the importance of Bulgaria, Romania and Greece collaborating to improve north/south road and rail connectivity to enable faster traffic flows.
Bulgarian regions see dwindling population
As of 2021, 39.3% of Bulgarian territory could be defined as a demographic desert, says Assoc. Dr. Nikolay Tsekov from the Institute for Population and Human Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
He explains that demographic deserts are territories with fewer than 10 people per square kilometer. Europe has other such places - mainly in the far north in Finland and Sweden. "Unfortunately, in Bulgaria, these territories are growing very quickly," Tsekov warns.
In 2001, 25% of the territory of our country was a demographic desert, so the 20-year interval has seen almost a 15% depopulation increase. The most threatened areas are Pernik, Kyustendil, Vidin, and Dobrich.
