Government orders investigation into Vitosha lift

Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev has instructed the State Agency for National Security DANS to investigate the suspension of the Simeonovsko Lift in Vitosha, the government announced today.

In his letter to DANS, Glavchev emphasized "widespread public discontent over the issue." The Interim Prime Minister justified the referral to DANS by stating that "questions arise regarding the environmental and transport security of the region, as well as the quality of life and health of citizens."

The Simeonovski cable lift was permanently shut down and will no longer be repaired, as announced last week by the Italian company TechnoAlpin, which owns the Bulgarian operator Vitosha Ski.

This morning the owner denied the allegations and expressed its desire to modernize the facilities but stressed that the government must first provide the necessary regulatory environment.

Operation against vote buying in Sofia

Three people have been detained in Sofia during an operation against vote buying, Sofia police reports.

The operation is being conducted in the neighborhoods of Hristo Botev, Filipovtsi, and Moderno Predgradie. As part of the operation, checks on commercial establishments are also underway.

Recent local and national elections have been marred by allegations of vote buying, especially in certain areas.

Universities close in protest

A total of 44 state and private universities in Bulgaria are closing their doors today in protest over pay and conditions. Exceptions will be made only for urgent activities such as exams, but no administrative services for students will be conducted. The decision was made at the end of last week by the Council of Rectors.

The rectors emphasize that the universities are not protesting solely for higher wages but also for adherence to the Higher Education Act. Recent changes to the law mandated salary increases in universities, which have still not been implemented.
