BSP submits motion to remove Borissov's immunity

BSP Chairperson Kornelia Ninova says her parliamentary group will submit a motion demanding that parliament vote to remove GERB leader Boyko Borissov's immunity.

This was requested by the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev on June 2 in connection with a pre-trial proceeding, known in the media as "BarcelonaGate", linked to a money laundering case. Borissov, for his part, flatly refused to surrender his immunity..

"The five-day period has expired and no one is doing anything about it. Since he (Boyko Borissov) does not have the courage to give it up himself, and the speaker of the parliament and the majority stomp the ball and hide it, we are taking the initiative to submit this project to a decision," Ninova explained on the sidelines of parliament.

Bulgarian state exam has record low grade

The average score of this year's obligatory graduate state exam - taken at the age of 18 - in Bulgarian language and literature is 50.14 points, which corresponds to a (Good) 3.93 grade, reports the Ministry of Education and Science. The department specifies that the result of 2023 is comparable, but lower - by about 2.5 points, than that of 2022.

A review of previous state exam data shows that this is the lowest result in at least five years. In 2021, the average performance was 52.44 points, and in 2020 - 53.24 points. In the previous two years, when the results were measured on a different scale, the average success was 4.06 and 4.24.

Compared to 2022, excellent (6) and very good (5) are decreasing, and good (4), average (3) and poor (2) are on the rise.

Wizz Air launches flights between Sofia and Tirana

Low-cost airline Wizz Air is launching flights to Tirana from Sofia. Flights to the Albanian capital start on December 18 and are already on sale on the carrier's website. They will operate three times a week - on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with prices starting from BGN 38.99 one-way.

This is the only direct flight from Sofia to Tirana, as Bulgaria's air links to the Western Balkans are still not advanced. Exceptions are Ryanair flights to Croatia - to Zagreb and Zadar. Last year, Bulgarian airline GullivAir tested the route between Sofia and Tirana with ATR, but the route was short lived, and the carrier's bid to develop a regional network to feed transoceanic flights to the US came to nothing.
