Borissov to fight call to strip him of immunity
GERB leader Boyko Borissov has declined to give away his legal immunity as an MP. Yesterday, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office proposed that chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev request parliament to remove the immunity of the former Prime Minister.
Borissov suspects that the request has been issued to hinder the formation of a government between GERB and WCC-DB. "Why did they ask for my immunity just yesterday? The goal seems to be to have no government. I did not have legal immunity for two years and now a law has been passed which introduces a mechanism for investigating the chief prosecutor and some people immediately started asking for my legal immunity," said Borissov.
Bulgaria seeks extension of Ukraine grain ban
Bulgaria and the four other countries that received EU permission to ban imports of Ukrainian grain have sought an extension to the restriction until the end of the year during a meeting of agriculture ministers in Brussels.
At the end of April, the European Commission agreed with Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia to ban imports of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower until June 5. The move was designed to help local farmers whose production is stuck in warehouses because of cheaper Ukrainian imports. A total of 156 million euros (26 million for Bulgaria) was given by Brussels to compensate farmers for their unsold production.
US ambassador denies interfering in appointments
US Ambassador Kenneth Merten told Bulgarian national TV that he had not discussed candidates of heads of state security services with political parties.
The newly appointed ambassador was asked about recordings leaked by MP Radostin Vassilev from a leaders meeting of WCC, in which Assen Vassilev mentions that the parliament will appoint new directors of state security agencies such as DANS, DAR, NSO and DATO that have been formally approved by foreign embassies.
"We respect Bulgaria as a sovereign state. These are decisions that must be made by Bulgarians," the US ambassador stressed.
