MoD to purchase 6 MiG-29 engines for BGN 26.4 million

The Ministry of Defense has issued a public order for the purchase of six refurbished engines for MiG-29 fighter aircrafts. It has set aside BGN 26.4 million including VAT for the purchase, according to a reference in the portal for public procurement.

The engines must be delivered no later than 12 months after the signing of the contract. The flight life of the Bulgarian MiG-29s is due to expire in mid-2023, but nevertheless the military intends to continue using them until the end of the year. Yet even a simple math calculation can deduct that even if the public order for the repaired engines is fulfilled in less than a year, Bulgarian airspace will be unprotected by the Bulgarian Air Force for at least a few months.

Guardrail repairs for BGN 4.3 million

The mandatory replacement of guardrails on republican and municipal roads will cost over BGN 4.3 million excluding VAT, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works has announced.

The length of republican roads in Bulgaria is currently 19,925 km, with the existing guardrails being around 6,922 km. At least 40% of the total length of republican roads' guardrails will need to be replaced with new ones that meet the requirements of the draft regulation, the ministry says.

Within one year from the date of the ordinance, the ministry said that roads or owners of roads must adopt a long-term program to ensure the safety zone of the existing roads by removing, moving, modifying and securing them with appropriate guardrail systems.

Bulgarian author is first nominee for Booker Prize

Georgi Gospodinov's novel Time Shelter has entered the longlist of nominations for the most prestigious international award given for a specific work.

The book was translated by Angela Rodel, who also receives credit in the nomination for the International Booker Prize. This is the first time ever that a piece by a Bulgarian author is included in the prestigious selection.

The jury at this year's edition of the award is chaired by "Goncourt" winner Leila Slimani. The winner will be announced on May 23, at a special dinner in London. The longlist consists of 13 books selected from a total of 134 applicants this year.
