Brace yourself for Bulgaria's darkest COVID day to date. This is becoming the biggest issue in the pre-election campaign of all the parties and all presidential hopefuls. Measures are bound to be tightened further in the run-up to the November elections and so voters will likely be fired up and angry.

243 new victims of the virus

This is an absolute 24 hour-record for Bulgaria over the past 18 months. The new cases are also record-high - 5863. Two things to bear in mind: Tuesday is the day on which delayed weekend data is gathered - so that adds a little noise and the green certificates are in, so a lot of new testing is happening.
